Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation which was established in 1962 as a State Owned Corporation was converted to a Limited Liability Company for a brief period of 6 years and was re-instilled in the state sector on the 4th June 2009, further strengthening the Corporation as the strongest and the largest Insurer in the Country. Sri Lanka Insurance is now backed by government protection and service excellence on par with the best in the private sector. At present Sri Lanka Insurance has over 120 Branches Island with an unparalleled assets base under management of over Rs.71.8 billion with a Life fund of over Rs.43 billion and over one million policies in force.

Chairman

Mr Kariyawasam is a senior corporate figure with over fifteen years of experience at Chief Executive Officer and General Manager level at Unimo Enterprise, United Motors Lanka (Ltd) and Browns Group of Companies respectively. His extensive experience in marketing and sales management encompasses a cross section of large corporate conglomerates. Mr Kariyawasam has also functioned as a respected consultant in business management and project management. He holds a certificate in marketing from CIM (UK). In addition he  was  appointed as a Director at  Apollo Hospital Colombo, where Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the Chairman.

Dr. Nalaka Godahewa
Managing Director

Dr. Nalaka Godahewa is the Managing Director of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd. He gained managerial & leadership experience at some of Sri Lanka ’s leading corporate institutions including Unilever, Suntel, and apparel giant MAS. Whilst at MAS holdings he was the CEO of several overseas operations. Dr. Godahewa is academically and professionally qualified in the multiple fields of Engineering, Marketing and Finance. He holds a PhD from the University of South Australia , as well as a BSc in Electronics and telecommunication Engineering from the Moratuwa University and an MBA from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura . He is Certified Management Accountant (UK), a Certified Management Accountant (AUS) and a Chartered Marketer (UK). He has also served as Consultant to the Board of Investment, Chairman – Imperial College of Business Studies and he is also a Director of CSC Kandia (Pvt) Ltd and The Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC. In June 2009, Dr Godahewa was appointed as the Competent Authority of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Limited by His Excellency the President, to manage the transition of SLIC from the private sector to the public sector. Dr. Godahewa is currently the President of the Sri Lankan Branch of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Australia, Honorary President of the Global Marketing Network and Chairman of the Association of Licensed Bunker Operators of Sri Lanka.

Mr. R. A. Jayatissa
Director

Mr Jayatissa is an Economist.  He is a BA honors graduate from the University of Ceylon and also holds a MA degree in Development Economics from Williams College - USA and a MA degree in Political Economy from the Boston University-USA.  Having served as Director of Economic Research and Assistant Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Senior Staff member and later as a Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and Deputy Secretary to The Treasury, he has extensive knowledge and experience in economic and financial policy issues and management. At present, Mr. Jayatissa is serving as Senior Economic and Policy Advisor to the Ministry of Finance and Planning.

Mr. Ravi Abeysuriya
Director

Mr. Abeysuriya is a Finance Professional with over 25 years of experience in capital markets. He was instrumental in establishment of Sri Lanka's first global investment research outsourcing company – Amba Research, the first credit rating agency – Fitch Ratings Lanka (JV with Fitch Ratings Inc., USA) and international investment bank (a JV with JP Morgan/Jardine Fleming). He has extensive experience in equity and fixed income analysis, company valuation and due diligence. In March 2007, was appointed a Commission Member of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by  H. E. President of Sri Lanka. Previously, he has also functioned as a member of the Prime Ministerial Task Force to identify and recommend reforms for the proper functioning of the financial system in Sri Lanka. He is a former President of CFA Sri Lanka [society of CFA Institute, USA (2001-2006)] he is also the President of the Information Technology Enabled Services Association of Sri Lanka (ITESA) and Vice President of Sri Lanka Association of Software and Service Companies (SLASSCOM).  He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Member of CFA Institute, Virginia, USA, and a Fellow Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, United Kingdom. He received an MBA from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Mr. Anura  B  Meddegoda
Director

Mr. Anura B Meddegoda, is an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka counting over 25 years in practice at the Bar. Immediately after his call to the Bar, Mr. Meddegoda joined the Department of the Attorney General as a State Counsel and was later promoted as Senior State Counsel. During his tenure at the Attorney General's Department Mr. Meddegoda appeared in several celebrated and complex cases representing the Attorney General and the State. Thereafter Mr. Meddegoda also functioned as a Prosecuting Trial Attorney/Legal Adviser in the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, The Netherlands for a long period. In that capacity he represented the Prosecutor of the International Tribunal in several international criminal trials and appeals. Upon his returned to Sri Lanka in 2005, Mr. Meddegoda has been in active legal practice as a Partner of Varners, a Firm of Lawyers, Notaries and Agents for Trade Marks and Patents. Mr. Meddegoda possesses a Master of Laws degree from King's College, University of London. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations. He has also been a Lecturer in Law at the University of Colombo and Sri Lanka Law College and functioned as Chairman and Member of the Board of Examiners at the Sri Lanka Law College.

Mr. Chithral Amaratunga

Mr. Chithral Amaratunga is a senior Partner of the law firm M/s Dissanayake Amaratunga Associates, Attorneys-at-law, Notaries Public and Solicitors (UK). He has been practicing as an Attorney-at-law and Notary Public since 1967. The law firm which was established in the year 1984  enjoys a wide  practice  in many segments of the legal profession. Mr. Amaratunga himself has experience in handling work related to corporate law, conveyancing, civil litigation, trade marks, patents and  company secretarial work etc. He functions as a legal consultant to some well known private sector business establishments and is a member  of   Boards of Director  of a number of public and private companies. Mr. Amaratunga takes a keen interest in Social work.  He is a member of and holds office in several Non Government Organisations.

Mr. Aruna Prasad Lekamge
Director

Mr Lekamge started his career as a teacher and then moved to marketing  and joined  SLI  marketing division and became the youngest person ever to achieve the rank of Millionaires Club Member of Sri Lanka Insurance within the shortest period of five years.  He  has the distinction of having introduced the concept of Project Insurance, aiming at maximum Risk Mitigation, a novel and a pioneering area in insurance in Sri Lanka at that time. Has achieved academic excellence in Business Management from  the University of Manchester UK and at the Finance and Management faculty of the University of Colombo, focusing in Risk Management and Insurance. He became the Senior National Coordinator / Head of the Technical Services Support Division of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Tsunami Recovery Programme. In this capacity he was responsible for  Construction Coordination and Management  in all districts affected by the tsunami in  2004. He harnessed both local and foreign expertise to provide services for all stake holders namely, Donors, Government, Line Ministries, UN Agencies, World Bank and delegates from 52 countries. Has contributed to a number of International Seminars on Risk Management and Corporate Planning in Singapore, UK, USA, France, Turkey and Malaysia.
     
   
Achievements - AA-(lka)
 
   
In the year 2007 Sri Lanka Insurance was awarded the AA- (lka) rating for the third consecutive year. Sri Lanka Insurance is the first insurance company in Sri Lanka to be assigned a global rating, for financial strength and stability, by an international rating agency – FitchRatings(London). The company obtained a key rating of AA-(Lka) for National Insurer Financial Strength and A+ rating for National Long Term Credit for the third consecutive year from FitchRatings (London). National Insurer Financial Strength denotes significant financial strength relative to all other insurance entities in the market and the potential for governemtn support.  The national long term rating (NLTR) denotes Sri Lanka Insurance’s high creditworthiness and low expectations of credit risks pertaining to long term debt.
 
   
ISO 9001 : 2008 Certificate (Quality Management System) 
 
Sri Lanka Insurance has been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 quality management system certification covering all its branches island wide. This certificate covers all the activities of the Head of the company and branches located in various part of the country and branch in Maldives.

The International Standards certification takes into consideration five aspects of process perfection when awarding ISO 9001:2008 – the criteria are Quality Management Systems, Management Responsibility, Resource Management, Product Realization, Measurement, Analysis and Improvement. ISO certification is an endorsement of the fulfillment of the above criteria by the Sri Lanka Insurance and formulation & maintenance of a quality management system in the company, in compliance with the standard.
