Corporate Social Responsibility

CSR at Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation

We understand the critical role we play as the nation’s pioneering insurer, and the impact we have within the communities we operate as a responsible corporate citizen. We have launched community initiatives across three main verticals where SLIC contributes heavily in nurturing socio-economic sustainability across Sri Lanka:

Children

With a long-term vision for strengthening the future generations of our country through the foundation of education, SLIC launched the Suba Pathum National Scholarship Scheme in 2018. Through this initiative, we will be rewarding 300 students who are top ranked at District level in the Grade 5 Scholarship, Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations each year, irrespective of them being an SLIC policyholder.

Community

Launched in 2015, our Call to Donate campaign is a unique CSR initiative that aims to raise awareness on cancer among Sri Lankans, with the overarching objective of donating through much needed funds, equipment and infrastructure to the Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama. With SLIC promising a donation of LKR 10 for each missed call received, Sri Lankans have partaken in the effort by dialing a dedicated number each year during the campaign.

Since its launch, SLIC has donated a CPAP machine, essential medicine, prosthetic limbs among other contributions to the Apeksha Cancer Hospital, with the most recent being a donation of LKR 5 million following over 480,000 missed calls in support of building an isolation room for the hospital’s Pediatric Ward.

Culture

While we carry out many CSR initiatives based on urgency and requirement, there are some that we implement as part of the strong traditions we have built over the past few decades. One such custom is assisting the pilgrims during Poson Season in Anuradhapura, a service provided by SLIC since 1990. The unique service includes tracking down lost individuals and belongings in and around the sacred city of Anuradhapura each year.

Operating around the clock from a centralized location at Pethmaga, we function through 5 sub-centers across Mahamevuna Uyana, Sinha Kuluna, Mirisavetuya, Thuparamaya and Sanda Hiru Seya in collaboration with the District Secretariat of Anuradhapura to provide this much-valued service for the millions of pilgrims visiting the ancient capital to commemorate Poson Poya. We also contribute towards the illumination of the sacred premises of Mihintale, while also distributing booklets containing sacred Bodhi Pooja verses among pilgrims.

Additionally, we also support in safeguarding one of Sri Lanka’s long-standing and famed traditions of Pereheras by providing protection through accident covers and vehicle breakdown assistance during festivities for pilgrims and sightseers during such festivals irrespective of them being an SLIC policyholder. SLIC covers the Kandy Esala Perahera, Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewala Perahera, Gangarama Nawam Perahera and the Gatabaru Dewala Perahera, the most revered peraheras of Sri Lanka drawing crowds in their millions.
